The Katie Bluhm Memorial Scholarship recognizes the qualities of exceptional athleticism, team spirit, and good sportsmanship in a graduating member of the MHS women's soccer team. Katie was known for her athletic prowess and selflessness, and the trustees intend for this scholarship to be awarded to a woman who embodies Katie's unwavering spirit which she exemplified both as an athlete and later in her valiant fight against cancer. You can read more about Katie here.
All graduating members of the Manhasset High School varsity women's soccer team are eligible for nomination.
Nominations for the Katie Bluhm Memorial Scholarship are officially communicated to the trustees by the soccer coach. However, the trustees encourage team involvement in recognizing athleticism, spirit, and sportsmanship in fellow teammates and all team members, regardless of year, may wish to put forward names of deserving teammates. At the beginning of each playing season, members of the Charitable Trust will visit the MHS women's soccer team to explain the meaning of this award and what the trustees are looking for. Coach McGrory, with input from team members, will communicate the list of nominees to the trustees at the end of each season.
Once the list of nominees is received, the trustees will collaborate with the Bluhm family and jointly interview the nominees. Having had much experience with MHS team sports, the trustees acknowledge and highly value all of the nominees for their exceptional qualities and character. Ultimately one nominee will be selected for her stand-out performance which is directly acknowledged by coaches, teammates, and the trustees, and widely appreciated in the MHS community. It is intended that the nomination and selection process will be conducted in the immediate weeks following the close of the soccer season, and the scholarship recipient will be presented with the award at the MHS graduation commencement the following June.
